The Rabat Forum on the Reduction of the Costs of Remittances of the African Diaspora

The Embassy of the Kingdom of Eswatini to the Kingdom of Morocco had the honor of participating in the Rabat Forum on the Reduction of the Costs of Remittances of the African Diaspora on January 12, 2023, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates.

This Forum, which is part of the implementation of the 2021-2031 agenda on African roots and the African Diaspora, aimed at conducting a total reflection on the factors and measures to support the dynamics of remittance flows from the African Diaspora while accelerating efforts to reduce associated costs, in alignment with the 2023 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Goal 20 of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (making remittances faster, safer and cheaper and promoting the financial inclusion of migrants).

Co-chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, H.E. Mr. Nasser Bourita, and his Togolese counterpart, H.E. Mr. Robert Dussey, this forum was held with the participation of representatives of the AU Commissioner for Development, Trade, Industry and Mining, the AU Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, the Director of Citizens and Diaspora of the AU and representative of Africa’s partners and financial institutions (African Development Bank, the World Bank, the IMF, the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development).

The Forum concluded with the presentation of the “Rabat Conclusions” which include the recommendations of the plenary sessions with the establishment of a steering committee to support African states in their actions to reduce the cost of transfers from the African diaspora to the African continent.

The recommendations contained in the “Rabat Conclusions” are to be proposed to the AU Summit scheduled for February 2023.
