The tale of the two Kingdoms
Eswatini-Morocco relations
The Kingdom of Morocco and the Kingdom of Eswatini established diplomatic relations in June 1996, and has since then, maintained fraternal and historical bonds, and both countries attach great importance in developing and strengthening their relations in the spirit of south-south cooperation and foreign relations, in general. The relations were cemented in 2002, where their Majesties, King Mswati III and King Mohammed VI met on the sidelines of the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, where they discussed ways of consolidating the relations and cooperation between the two countries
Deepening the relations
In 202, the two countries took great strides to strengthen the relations when Eswatini established and Embassy and Consulate General in Rabat and Laayoune, respectively. The offices were inaugurated in the same year, while operations commenced in April 2022.
Development cooperation
The two countries have so far, concluded and signed several bilateral cooperation arrangements, while others are pending signature.
Concluded bilateral arrangements
TProtocol of Cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs; General Agreement on Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation; Agreement to establish a Joint Cooperation Commission (JCC); Joint Declaration on Intent on Cooperation in the Field of Health; Protocol on Industrial Cooperation; Partnership Agreement between the Moulay Abdellah Communal Council of Morocco and the Piggs Peak Town Council of Eswatini; and the Protocol of Cooperation on Parliamentary consultations.
Bilateral arrangements pending signature
Agreement on the waiver of visa requirements for citizens holding diplomatic and service/official passports; Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Eswatini and the Moroccan Academy for Diplomatic Studies; the Framework Cooperation Agreement Relating to the Granting of Academic Scholarships, Internships, and Sharing of Expertise; Memorandum of Understanding in the field of Youth; Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Justice of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs of the Kingdom of Eswatini; and Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Tourism.
The scholarship programme
The current annual quota extended to Eswatini students pursuing studies in Moroccan Institutes of Higher Learning in the Kingdom of Morocco stands at fifteen (15. The scholarship is divided into three (3) categories as follows: Five (5) students (in French universities); Five (5) students (in an English University); and Five (5) students (in French Technical and Vocational and Education Training – TVET institutions).
