The marula festival is one of the colourful events of Eswati and that has succeeded in uniting Emaswati. Locally, it is referred to as the Buganu (Marula) Ceremony. It takes place in February and March every year, signifying a celebration of the harvest of the Marula fruit. This is a time where Emaswati, particularly the women regiment (Lutsango), is united in song and dance in front of their Majesties, the King and Queen Mother, and to the world. It is a cultural festivity adored by EmaSwati and international visitors alike.
The event is about dancing and celebrating the provision of the fruit and drink used for various purposes including skin care products, among others. It does not only concentrate on marula but other crops produced by women. The women (Lutsango) are the collectors and brewers of the drink. They are also a centre of attraction that performs the spectacular dance for the better part of the main day of celebrations.
